Barcelona's Three Marinas: Which One to Head For from the Airport
Nobody arrives at a marina travelling light. Between the terminal and the pontoon there's a case of electronics, a long sail bag, a box of spares ordered a month ago and collected at last. And a departure time the skipper won't move.
First question: where exactly. Barcelona has three marinas, at opposite ends of the city.
Port Vell: the centre and the big vessels
The best known and most central. Berths lie five minutes' walk from the Gothic Quarter, with Barceloneta and its beach next door. Large yachts stay here: the marina takes vessels up to a hundred and ninety metres, and not many harbours in Europe can say that.
The area is gated, with a checkpoint at the entrance. Your driver reaches the gate; beyond it you go on a pass. If the berth sits far from the entrance, ask the crew if they'll meet you with a trolley - the pontoons run long.
From the airport to Port Vell is 15 km, ~23 min on the road - with the Ronda Litoral clear. On a weekday morning, allow more.
Port Olímpic: mid-size yachts and city life
Further up the coast, past Barceloneta. Built for the 1992 Olympics, hence the name. Yachts here are smaller, up to thirty metres, with restaurants, bars and a promenade all around.
A plus for the crew: the marina is open, so a car reaches almost the pontoon itself. A minus for sleep: the seafront doesn't quieten down until three in the morning.
Expect a slightly longer drive from the airport than to Port Vell. Same road, just further along the shore.
Port Ginesta: the south and a clean exit to sea
A different world altogether. This is Castelldefels, 20 kilometres south of the city, at the foot of the Garraf massif. The marina is large, over a thousand berths, and it sits right at the exit to open sea - no long run out of the city bay.
People come here to head south, towards Sitges and beyond, or because they want the yacht for sailing, not for sitting beside a city. It's quiet, the beach is close, and the infrastructure is a chandlery and two restaurants.
From the airport the drive here is shorter than into the city: the terminals sit on the southern edge, and the road to Castelldefels follows the C-32 around town.
How to choose before you choose the yacht
A week's charter along the coast: Port Vell or Port Olímpic, so you can step into the city in the evening. A passage to the Balearics or south: Port Ginesta, which saves you an hour out of the bay. A crew change on a big yacht: almost certainly Port Vell, which takes vessels over forty metres.
Luggage, and how many cars you need
Yacht luggage doesn't fit a saloon boot: a long sail bag goes in the Van and nowhere else. The Van takes seven people, and its luggage compartment is separate. If the crew is bigger, book two cars for one time - in the app that means two bookings with the same address.
Electronics cases ride better in the cabin than the boot, especially in summer. Tell the driver as you get in.
When the day gets complicated
Collect two people from the airport, stop at a supplier for a part, head back to the port, then go again for the skipper. That's four legs, four bookings - or one car by the hour: the driver waits between stops, the luggage stays in the car, and you change the route as you go.

The marina is far from the airport and my flight is delayed. What about the berthing window?
The driver tracks the flight and brings the car for the actual landing time. Your berthing window is a question for the skipper, but the first hour of airport waiting is free, so a slow baggage belt costs you nothing.
