What awaits you in Baiona
The fortress of Monterreal. A walled peninsula from the sixteenth century, with the parador inside, but the walls are open to everyone: a walk along them takes about forty minutes with views of the bay and the Cíes Islands.
The Pinta. On 1 March 1493 this caravel brought the first news of the New World to Europe, and Baiona was the port where it landed. A replica is moored in the harbour and you can go aboard.
Beaches and the Virxe da Rocha. Ribeira and Barbeira are in the town itself, Ladeira is a long sandy beach at the mouth of the Miñor, and América is across the bridge, already in Nigrán. Above the town stands the fifteen-metre statue of the Virgin with a boat in her hand: a lift takes you up inside it.
The Cíes Islands are opposite. Boats leave from Baiona in summer, and the number of visitors is limited, so tickets go early. The white sand of Rodas beach is what the Guardian once called the best beach in the world.
The old town. Stone arcades, granite houses and seafood taverns around the collegiate church. Everything is within a ten-minute walk.
