Transfer from Reus Airport to Priorat
Priorat is close to the airport and badly served by public transport, which is an unusual combination. Falset, the main town, is thirty seven kilometres away, about forty minutes by road. The villages beyond it are another twenty minutes on roads that climb and turn.
There is a regional railway through Falset, but reaching it from the terminal means going into Reus first, and no train reaches the villages at all. For a wine region, that matters: the cellars are outside the villages.

What makes Priorat different
The soil. It is llicorella, a black slate that splits into shards and holds almost no water, so the vines drive their roots metres down to find it. The result is very low yields and concentrated wine, and it is the reason a small inland region ended up with the highest wine classification in the country.
The vineyards are planted on terraces cut into steep hillsides, sometimes at angles that rule out machinery altogether, so the harvest is done by hand and carried out on foot or by mule.
The villages are small and stone-built: Gratallops, Porrera, Torroja del Priorat, Escaladei with the ruins of the Carthusian monastery that gave the region its name. Falset is the largest and has the wine museum and most of the places to stay.
Getting there: the options
By train. A regional line reaches Falset, but you must get into Reus to board it, and no train serves the villages or the cellars.
By bus. Services between the villages are built around school and work hours, not visits, and there are few of them.
By hire car. The obvious answer, except for the obvious problem: this is a wine region and someone has to drive.
By private transfer. Door to the cellar, and nobody in the group has to stay sober. Waiting and stops between cellars are agreed in advance.
Visiting the cellars
Book ahead. Most producers here are small and receive visitors by appointment rather than opening a door to the street. A cellar that takes walk-ins is the exception.
Two or three in a day is the sensible number. The distances are short but the roads are slow, and a proper visit runs to an hour and a half.
Tell us the itinerary when you book. We plan the waiting and the legs between cellars in advance, so the price is known before you set off rather than counted at the end.
Harvest is September. The villages are busy and the cellars are working, which is the most interesting time to visit and the hardest to get an appointment.
