The Citadel and Greek Rhode. The Renaissance fortress went up in 1543, but its walls hide a far older story. Inside are a quarter of the Greek colony of Rhode, a Roman villa and the 11th-century Romanesque monastery of Santa Maria. The Citadel houses the museum of the history of Roses, and you will find it open on almost any day of the year: it closes only on 25 and 26 December and 1 and 6 January.
Trinitat Castle. Building work on it began in 1544 on the Punta de la Poncella headland, right above the Roses lighthouse. Its walls are up to two metres thick, and the top platform gives a panorama of the whole bay. From October to May the castle welcomes visitors only at weekends, and visits must be booked in advance by phone or email.
Beaches and coves. The tourist office counts 17 beaches and coves in Roses, and they vary a great deal. At the head of the bay there are wide beaches with fine sand and a gentle slope into the water, ideal for a holiday with children. The further east you go, the higher and steeper the shore becomes, with small secluded coves hidden among the rocks.
Cap de Creus Natural Park. Part of the municipality of Roses lies within Cap de Creus Natural Park. It is a rocky peninsula where paths wind above the sea, with hidden coves opening up below. In a single trip you can see the ancient Citadel, the beaches of the bay and the wild rocks of the park.
The road from the airport. For most of the way the driver takes the AP-7 to Figueres, then turns onto a local road leading to the bay. There are no toll sections on the route: the AP-7 has been toll-free since 2021. The direct bus from the airport runs only at weekends, and only once a day, while a transfer picks you up whenever your plane lands.
Every option with prices and travel times. Operator fares current as of October 2026.
