Only one road leads to Cadaqués. The town is cut off from the rest of the coast by the Cap de Creus massif, and the only way in is over the mountain pass on a winding road. That inaccessibility is what saved Cadaqués from development: few hotels, no high-rises at all.
White houses and pebble pavements. Whitewashed facades are required by local rules, so the whole centre is one colour. The streets are paved with pebbles set on edge - beautiful, but bring comfortable shoes.
The Dalí house-museum in Portlligat. The artist lived here for forty years and spent all of them extending the house from a fisherman's hut: a studio with a window onto the bay, rooms linked by narrow passages, an olive grove in the yard. Visits are by advance booking only, groups go in every ten minutes, and tickets must be collected half an hour before your slot. The museum is closed in January and February.
Cap de Creus is the easternmost point of Spain. A natural park of jagged slate rocks with a lighthouse at the edge. Dalí said these rocks taught him surrealism, and on the way to the lighthouse you see what he meant.
Coves instead of sandy beaches. The shore here is rocky, the water clear. The town beach is pebbly, and the quiet coves are reached on foot along the path or by boat from the harbour.
