From the airport to central Málaga
Central Málaga is 17 km from the airport, and the drive takes ~37 min on the MA-20.
The C-1 local train reaches the centre in twelve minutes, but from María Zambrano station you still have to get to the hotel with suitcases. What awaits you in Málaga
A working city, not a resort facade. Over the last ten years Málaga has stopped being a place people fly into and become a place where they stay. The Moorish Alcazaba rises straight out of the old town, a Roman theatre has been excavated at its foot, and higher up the ridge stands Gibralfaro castle, joined to it by a fortress wall. Below is a compact pedestrian centre: Calle Larios running through the middle, Plaza de la Constitución at one end of it, and the Atarazanas market under its glass-and-iron roof, built into the stone gateway of a fourteenth-century Moorish shipyard.
The sea is ten minutes on foot from the cathedral. La Malagueta is the city beach with dark sand and chiringuitos along the shore, where sardines are grilled on skewers over an open fire. To the west the old commercial port has been turned into Muelle Uno: a low promenade with terraces and shaded galleries, ending in the multicoloured glass cube of the Centre Pompidou.
How it differs from the coastal towns. Torremolinos and Benalmádena to the west empty out in winter, while Málaga works all year round, so the kitchens and bars run on a city timetable, not a holiday one. And there are museums here to rescue a grey day: the Picasso museum in the Buenavista palace, the Carmen Thyssen collection a couple of streets away, and the CAC centre for contemporary art in the Soho quarter, where murals take up whole house walls.
