The Costa del Sol before the towers went up. Estepona kept the shape of an old Andalusian town: a maze of whitewashed lanes behind the seafront, flower pots climbing every wall, and a working fishing harbour that still lands a catch each morning. In the last decade the town turned its old quarter into an open-air gallery, with large murals painted across whole house fronts and a Ruta de Murales that maps them out.
The beaches run for over twenty kilometres. The central Playa de la Rada sits right below the promenade, wide and easy for families; further out, smaller coves like Playa del Cristo stay calm because a breakwater shelters them. The palm-lined seafront walk ties them together and is the town's real living room in the evenings.
What sets it apart from its neighbours. Marbella and Puerto Banus are half an hour east and louder; Estepona stays a town first and a resort second. The Orquidario, a glass dome sheltering thousands of orchids, and the Selwo Aventura safari park inland give families a rainy-day plan, while the Sierra Bermeja rises red behind the town for anyone who wants a walk with a view over the strait to Africa.
From the airport the run is straightforward: an hour along the AP‑7, and the driver brings you to the door rather than to a bus stop on the edge of town.
