What awaits you in Gandía
Two towns under one name. Gandía is split in two. The historic centre stands a couple of kilometres from the sea, and the beach town, Platja de Gandia, reaches the water beyond the harbour at Grau. The inland half is the duchy of the Borja family, the very same Borgias, and the ducal palace, the Palau Ducal, still stands: Gothic rebuilt in Baroque, with the Hall of Crowns and the five painted rooms of the Golden Gallery. Next to it are the collegiate church of La Seu and the old university building, all within a grid of streets you walk around.
But people book here for the beach. Platja de Gandia is a long and unusually wide strip of fine sand with a gentle slope into the water, which is why families choose it; it runs north from the harbour behind a straight seafront of hotels, apartment blocks and restaurants. This is a Spanish holiday beach rather than an expat one, so August is packed and June and September are calm.
How it differs from its neighbours. Cullera to the north is held by its castle hill, Dénia to the south by its port and ferries; Gandía is flatter and more ordinary in its daily life, and that is half its appeal: it has a real centre with its own market and shops, not just a strip along the sea. The palace is the obvious choice for a rainy day, and the marsh behind the beach, a remnant of the wetlands this whole coast once was, is worth an early morning if you are interested in birds.
