A small airport twenty minutes from the bay. San Sebastián's own airport stands in Hondarribia by the French border, so close that the road into the city runs along the coast. Hondarribia itself is worth lingering in: a walled upper town with painted balconies above a fishing port.
The old quarter is made for walking and eating. The Parte Vieja packs a hundred bars into a few blocks, each with its own speciality on the counter. The rule is simple: one pintxo and one glass, then move on. Behind them the basilica of Santa María and the church of San Vicente anchor streets rebuilt after the fire of 1813.
Three beaches, three moods. La Concha is calm, inside the bay; Ondarreta at its western end is quieter and family-sized; and Zurriola across the river Urumea faces the open ocean and belongs to the surfers. At the far end of Ondarreta, Chillida's Comb of the Wind is set into the rocks - where the city ends.
When the city is full. The film festival in September and the Semana Grande in August book out the hotels months ahead, and the Tamborrada on the twentieth of January turns the whole city into a drum for a day. Outside those weeks it is a city of two hundred thousand people that simply has a beach in the middle.
