La Merce 2026: dates, closures and how to get around
La Mercè is Barcelona's main festival, held every September around the feast day of the Virgin of Mercy. In 2026 it runs from 23 to 28 September.
For five days the centre of the city becomes a stage. Human towers rise in Plaça Sant Jaume, fire runs move through the old town at night, and open-air concerts fill squares across several districts. Most of it is free.
What closes and when
Road closures concentrate in Ciutat Vella, parts of the Eixample and around Montjuïc. Via Laietana and La Rambla close to traffic during the main events, and the surrounding streets follow depending on the programme that day.
The closures are not announced far in advance. The city publishes them as the programme firms up, usually in early September.
What this means for a transfer
During festival days the honest answer is that door-to-door is not always possible. A driver who knows the city will get you as close as the barriers allow, which is often a street or two away rather than the hotel entrance.
That is worth knowing when you book, particularly with heavy luggage or with children. Arriving in the late morning or early afternoon is easier than arriving during an evening event.
If you are coming from the airport, the route to the centre is 14 km and normally about 24 minutes. During La Mercè evenings, plan for longer. The airport to Barcelona centre page shows the route.
Luggage and crowds do not mix
The practical problem during La Mercè is not the distance, it is the last two hundred metres. Pulling two suitcases through a crowd watching a correfoc is unpleasant and slow.
Couples and solo travellers usually manage with the Comfort class. Groups and families are better off with the Van, which keeps everything in one vehicle instead of splitting across two.

During the festival the metro is genuinely the fastest way across the centre. Where a car earns its keep is the airport run with luggage, and the late night return when services thin out.
