An industrial city that rebuilt itself around a museum. Until the eighties Bilbao was shipyards and blast furnaces on a dirty river. In 1997 the Guggenheim opened and the city turned itself inside out: the Nervión was cleaned up, the riverbank became a place to walk, and Frank Gehry's titanium shell now draws a million people a year to a spot people used to simply drive past.

The old town is seven streets and a market. The Siete Calles have existed since the fourteenth century, and the La Ribera market on the riverbank is one of the largest covered markets in Europe. This is where you eat: pintxos are laid out on the bar, you point, and you pay at the end. It is nothing like a sit-down lunch, and all the better for it.

Two Bilbaos ten minutes apart. The Ensanche on the other bank is nineteenth-century and strict lines, with the Fine Arts Museum and the wide Gran Vía. And from the right bank, from Campo Volantín, a funicular climbs Artxanda, from where you see the whole basin. Rain is frequent here even in August - which is why the city is so green and why the museums matter so much.

Practical details. The airport is nine kilometres north of the centre and handles almost all the traffic for the Basque Country, including those going on to San Sebastián and Vitoria. Bilbao is compact enough: once in the city you walk or ride the metro designed by Norman Foster - its curved glass entrances are known in town as fosteritos.

The road from the airport into the city takes about a quarter of an hour.
