Booked a transfer from El Prat Airport to our hotel in the Gothic Quarter and it was flawless. What awaits you in Bilbao
An industrial city that rebuilt itself around a museum. Until the eighties Bilbao was still an industrial city. In 1997 the Guggenheim opened and the city turned itself inside out: the banks of the Nervión became a place to stroll, and Frank Gehry's titanium ship now draws around a million people a year to a spot people used to simply drive past.
The old town: seven streets and a market. Las Siete Calles started out as three streets when the town was founded more than 700 years ago, and four more were added later. The La Ribera market on the riverbank is considered one of the largest covered markets in Europe. This is where people eat: the old town is full of pintxo bars. It is nothing like a sit-down lunch, and all the better for it.
Two Bilbaos ten minutes apart. The Ensanche on the other bank is the nineteenth century and strict lines, with the Fine Arts Museum and the wide Gran Vía. And not far from the city hall a funicular dating from 1915 climbs Artxanda, from where you can see the whole basin.
Practical details. The airport is 7 km north of the centre and handles almost all the traffic for the Basque Country, including people travelling on to San Sebastián and Vitoria. Bilbao is compact enough: once in the city, you walk or ride the metro designed by Norman Foster. Its curved glass entrances are known locally as fosteritos.
